Journey to The Most Extreme Lake

Tilicho Lake is a popular destination for the Annapurna Circuit Trek and is one of the most popular treks in Nepal. The trek to Tilicho diverts from the Annapurna Circuit at Manang whereby we take a southward route to Khangsar. From Khangsar village, we walk further upwards to reach the Tilicho Base Camp. From there, we have to ascend again to reach Tilicho Lake.

The trail to the lake is quite adventurous as we walk through a ridge along a slope. The path is unique as there is nothing except stones and sand. However, you’ll continuously see the views of the Annapurna Range and Tilicho Himal itself. You will also walk through Thorong La pass, which is at a height of 5416 meters from sea level.

How Difficult is the Annapurna Circuit Trek With the Tilicho lake?

This trek is moderately challenging. Most trekkers can complete this trail with extra caution and attention. The difficult part is to ascend to the lake itself because the trek routes to this lake are mostly covered in snow which may befuddle the trekkers. Similarly, the lack of tea houses on the periphery of the lake adds more to its difficulties.

To spend a night on the world's highest glacier lake, we have to stay in a tent for a night. So, the tools are carried from the city areas. This journey is suitable for beginners too.

More about the Tilicho Lake Trek

The route of the Tilicho Lake Trek is virtually the same as that of the Annapurna Circuit Trek, except for the diversion at Manang. So, we have to return from the lake to Manang and continue on the trail. Alternatively, we can also go through a different route to reach Jomsom directly.

The Tilicho Lake Trek package can be customized as per your needs, availability, and budget. The Annapurna circuit trek with Tilicho lake's itinerary is detailly written down, however, We can fully customize the itinerary of the trek as per your request and expectations. Tilicho Lake Overview:

The Tilicho Lake stands as a pristine gem cradled within Nepal's Annapurna Himalayas, its sapphire-blue waters reflecting the towering grandeur of Annapurna II (7,937 m | 26,040 ft), Gangapurna (7,455 m | 24,457 ft) and Tilicho Peak (7,134 m | 23,405 feet).

It lies in the Annapurna region of Nepal, inside the Manang district, and was once known as the Nepal’s highest lake, as it is situated at an altitude of 4,919 meters (16,138 ft), but now is overthrown by the Kajin Sara Lake which is situated at 5,200 m, however, Tilicho Lake is still the Lake with longest diameter, lengthening upto 4km in length and 1.2 km in width. Another interesting fact about Tilicho lake is that, there are neither water sources present, nor is there a designated route for water to follow, so the water stays within the lake. No, aquatic life is found here in TIlicho Lake.

As ascending to Tilicho Lake is always tough as you trek in the Himalays with cold weather, and the average temperature ranges from 0 to -5 degrees Celsius, so Autumn and Spring are the best season for trekking the Annapurna Circuit Trek and a side trek to Tilicho Lake.

The Tilicho Lake is a must-trek destination, as a side trek for those who are hiking the Annapurna Circuit Trek, however, not only limited to trekkers hundred of pilgrims visit Tilicho Lake as it is a sacred place for both Hindus and Buddhists. The journey to Tilicho Lake weaves through ever-changing landscapes, from verdant valleys to rugged alpine terrains, and its cultural significance echoes through Hindu and Buddhist beliefs. This remote haven's breathtaking beauty comes with challenges - the need for acclimatization and the unpredictable mountain weather. Yet, the reward of witnessing this sacred lake's shimmering serenity against the backdrop of majestic peaks is an experience with fond memories that lingers long after the trek is over.

Note: You can camp in Tilicho Lake itself, but due to the risk of altitude sickness many perfer not to camp in the Tilicho Lake. If you really want to camp we suggest you to take enough oxygen can to prevent altitude sickness.

Ice Lake ( Kicho Tal) Overview:

Ice Lake, known as Kicho Tal, is a stunning alpine gem in Nepal's Manang Valley. Sitting at an impressive altitude of 4620 meters (15,157 feet), this high-mountain lake often wears a frosty coat due to its location. A bowl-shaped valley cradles the lake, encircled by majestic snow-crowned peaks that touch the sky. The journey to Ice Lake usually starts from either Manang or Braka villages and takes about 7-10 hours round trip, offering a captivating trekking adventure.

Ice Lake has earned its spot as a sought-after destination for avid hikers exploring the renowned Annapurna Circuit. This hike is visually enchanting and a test of your mettle. Once you arrive, the views from the lake's vantage point are nothing short of breathtaking. Imagine gazing out upon the panorama of snow-kissed peaks like Annapurna II (7937 meters), Annapurna III (7219 meters), and Gangapurna (7406 meters). The lake is cradled by glaciers, filled with pure meltwater streaming down from these icy giants.

While the Ice Lake is always cold, due to its high altitude in the Himalayas, and the average temperature ranges from 2 to -5 degrees Celsius, Annapurna Circuit Trek and visit to Tilicho Lake is comparatively easier during spring and Autumn seasons.

The area surrounding Ice Lake is a pristine wilderness, an untouched canvas of natural beauty. The lake's reflective waters mirror the astonishing views, and the untamed wilderness embraces you in raw splendor. Reaching Ice Lake is a physical accomplishment and a soul-filling journey that rewards you with a sense of triumph and a connection to nature's grandeur.

1: What is the best time for Tilicho Lake trek?
March-May and October-December are the peak seasons to do the Tilicho Lake trek. During March-May, the weathers are usually clear and most of the hills are covered with green vegetation and blooming Rhododendron. Also, snowfall is pretty common in this season. The clearest and mind-boggling view of the Himalayas can be seen in October as the skies are very clear with no rainfall and meager fog. However, the trekking routes are usually more crowded from October to December than in any other season. Trekking is often very difficult during monsoon because the trails are muddy and slippery so, there is a high chance of injury or accident

2: What about food and accommodation?
Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of the popular treks among trekkers so, tea houses are very common in most places of this region. Several options are available for the food so, the guest can savor the cuisine according to their taste. As for the lodgings, each visitor gets a single room but in some cases, they have to share their room. In conclusion, we can say that the facilities for food and lodgings are not the problem on this journey.

3: Is this trek possible with children?
There is no age limit for trekking so, most of the treks are possible even when the children are tagging along. This particular trek may turn out to be a very difficult trek while taking children as they are very prone to cold, and altitude sickness, and more importantly, they need extra care and attention. The trails are steep and rocky, and it is very physically demanding but, the problem can be hugely minimized if we consider taking an extra special guide for watching the children.

4: Are there any tea houses near Tilicho Lake?
No, there aren’t any tea houses up to this day but spending the night is possible via camping. For camping, we need to take all the necessary tools with us from the city areas because it is almost impossible to facilitate all the mandatory tools required for camping from the nearby villages. So, one may be required to hire an extra porter to carry the goods. The nights are very cold in the highest lake in the world, so make sure to carry warm clothes and sleeping bags.

5: Is boating possible in Tilicho Lake?
Boating is almost impossible in Tilicho Lake but, Kayaking is possible though it is very difficult to manage. The gears and tools for kayaking ought to be carried from the cities so, one may need an extra porter to carry the tools. The kayakers also may be required to hire extra manpower for safety purposes.

6: How hard is this trek?
This trek is moderately challenging. Most trekkers can complete this trail with extra caution and attention. This journey is suitable for beginners too.

Annapurna Circuit Trek

Mohan, Bharat and their team were fantastic. Mohan went above and beyond to make an extremely competitive price and ensured that we enjoyed ourselves on the trek with having the worry of meals taken care of and accommodation. Especially in the busy time of year there were a few times that accommodation was hard to come by but our guide had gone to great length to make sure we had a place to eat, sleep with a lot of other comforts like hot showers available. The circuit exceeded all expectation, with the help of Mohan and his team. Couldn’t recommend them enough.

Annapurna Circuit Trek

We booked our guide and porter with North Nepal for our Annapurna circuit trek. Mohan was super helpful in helping organise our trek and responsive in communication.

Our guide (Bishnu) and porter (Ganesh) took care of us throughout the 14 day trek from Dharapani to Tatopani. They made sure we have an enjoyable, fun and most importantly safe trek during these days. Bishnu also shared a lot of local knowledge, culture and customs that we wouldn’t know of if travelling without a guide. Both are kind, honest and go out of the way to host their guests. I strongly recommend booking with North Nepal.
