This hike is one of the easiest and most accessible, making it a perfect adventure for people of all ages. The Australian Camp day hike from Pokhara is a favorite among those seeking quality single-day trips.

The Australian Camp Nepal offers fantastic sunset and sunrise views if you stay overnight. The magnificent views of the Himalayan mountains such as Annapurna IV, Macchapuchre, Lamjung Himal, and much more. Moreover, the gorgeous view of the Pokhara Valley including Fewa Lake, Pokhara Peace Stupa, the hill of Sarangkot, and even the Lakeside adds more beauty to the experience.

The Kande to Australian Camp distance is easy, leading you through beautiful trails and some friendly villages. Interestingly, the Australian Camp was named so due to a mispronunciation by the local people. The real name of this place is Thulo Kharka and later it was known as Austrain Camp. The pronunciation of Austrian Camp was harder for locals so they changed it to Australian Camp.

After 2 - 3 hours of hiking, you can find comfort in one of the many Australian Camp hotels, providing a cozy retreat in the heart of the Annapurna region. Experience the majesty of the Australian Camp Pokhara and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Nepal.

What to Expect Australian Camp Hike?

Australian Camp Nepal trek is a fairly smooth trek in the stunning foothills of the Annapurna range. The trip gives appropriate views of the Annapurna Mountain range including Annapurna South (7219m), Annapurna III(7575m), Annapurna IV(7535m), Machhapuchhre (6993m) as well as Hiunchuli(6441m) and so on.

The terraces of rice fields, the feeling of a fresh cool breeze as well as the proximity to the mountains make this trek an extraordinary one. Additionally, Australian Camp Nepal is located in a place of Annapurna region where there is a lot of rainfall during summer. This results in verdant green forests with lichen growing on the trunks. The sunrise from there is quite a sight to behold.

More About Australian Camp

This trek is a 1-day trip if we start from Pokhara but other have to travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara first. This hike passes through Dhampus Village, one of the famed villages of Annapurna Sanctuary. So, we get to peek at the cultural and traditional livelihood of the village. Also, sometimes it is also known as Dhampus Village Trek.

Moreover, this is one of the shortest hikes of the whole Annapurna Circuit on the outskirts of Pokhara. Moreover, we aren't charged with the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit cost. The majority of the hikers opt for this trek as a recreation from their hectic busy life as they can commence their trek on weekend getaways. Furthermore, this place is a perfect spot for spending a night in a tent.

The Australian camp is often used by schools and colleges as a picnic spot. However, they have to certain toll fee for that. This place is one of the popular picnic spots because it is the perfect combination of green forests, panoramic views of mountains, and culturally enriched villages.

we also have an alternative choice after the completion of this trek. We can hike around Pokhara valley, do boating in Phewa Lake as well as visit some of the nearby lakes of the Kaski district such as Begnas Lake and Rupa Lake.

Australian or Austrian Camp: Facts and History

The real name of the Australian Camp is actually "Thulo Kharka," which means "big pasture" in Nepali. Thulo Kharka used to be a seasonal grazing area for buffalo and cow herders from the nearby villages of Dhampus, Naudanda, and others.

The starting point of the Australian Camp Hike is the same as Mardi Himal Trek, so you can also enjoy the Australian Camp during your Trek to Mardi Himal.

Until the early 1980s, not many trekkers knew about or visited Thulo Kharka. In the late 1980s, a group of people from Austria discovered the beauty of Thulo Kharka and started camping there for several days, drawn by its peaceful and pristine environment, as well as the mesmerizing mountain views. As they frequently camped in this area, locals began referring to it as the "Austrian Camp." However, due to the difficulty in pronouncing "Austrian" for the local Nepalese people, the name evolved into "Australian Camp," which is how it became known.

So, while the place is commonly referred to as "Australian Camp," its real/local name is "Thulo Kharka," and it gained its current popularity due to the frequent camping activities of Austrian visitors in the late 1980s.

Australian Camp Dhampus Hike

I took a day hike with Niranzan to Australian Camp and Dhampus and a bit further, about 17km or so. This hike can be broken up into a few days, but I thought the day hike was perfect and felt like good prep for some multi-day trips I have coming up. As a young, solo female traveler, it can be stressful doing things like this alone, but Niranzan made me feel very safe and comfortable. He has endless knowledge about Nepalese culture and language, and I learned so much from him during the trek. Thanks so much for such a wonderful experience!
