Festivals of Bhutan

    Bhutan festivals are the life of Bhutanese culture and traditions. Festivals are celebrated with traditional dances and colorful maks. Often celebrated in the open courtyard of the Dzongs, it is the best time to share happiness and blessings. Most of the festivals in Bhutan are backed by folklore and stories of the past. 

    Gomphu Kora Festival

    Ghomphu Kora Festival is celebrated in March at Trashigang in eastern Bhutan. This festival is celebrated with mask dance, religious music, and dance. Monks chant the prayers. Ghomphu means “Meditative Cave” and Kora means “circumambulation” which translates to pilgrimage circulation around the Meditative Cave. 

    Sakteng Festival

    Sakteng festival is celebrated by the Brokpa community who lives in the Merak and Sakteng of Bhutan. This festival is a rare opportunity for travelers to see the traditional culture and lifestyle of Brokpa community. They speak their own language which is different from the majority of Bhutenses. This festival occurs in June. On this day, people perform mask dance, archery skills, and horse riding. 

    Matsutake Mushroom Festival

    Matsutake Mushroom Festival is the celebration of Bhutans' rich natural resources and biodiversity. The Matsutake Mushroom Festival falls in August. This festival is celebrated by picking Matsutake mushrooms in the coniferous forest of Bhutan. Key highlights of this festival are picking Matsutake mushrooms and cooking illustrated by the locals.     Jomolhari Mountain Festival

Bhutan in Spring (March-mid April):

Bhutan in Summer/Monsoon (Mid-April- Mid-September):

Summer in Bhutan is long with humid climates. Temperature ranges from 15°C to 30°C. It can be a good time for a short hike and trek. Upper region of the Butan is generally cooler compared to the lower region. However, Summer comes with frequent rains mostly in the southern region. Bhutan in Autumn (September-November):

Autumn is also best season to trek Bhutan. Temperature ranges from 10°C to 25°C. Climate is mild. The environment looks vibrant with rice fields, blooming wildflowers, and colorful dense forests. Bhutan in Winter (December-February):

Winter is cold. Temperature ranges from –17°C during the day. -6–5°C at night. There’s heavy snowfall in the upper region of the country making it difficult to drive or walk. Despite the difficulty, snow is the main highlight during winter. Snow on the coniferous forest and Dzongs makes the scene surreal.
