Chulu Far East Expedition Overview:
The Chulu Far East Expedition begins along the Annapurna Circuit trail, starting from Besisahar in the lowlands of the Marshyangdi Valley. The trail follows the river, passing through forests, alpine meadows, and charming Himalayan villages like Chame, Pisang, and Ghyaru. As you trek higher, you’ll experience the rich culture of the local Gurung and Thakali communities and visit ancient monasteries that add a spiritual dimension to the journey. After the trek up to Chulu Far East Base Camp, the climb itself involves steep sections, which are filled with snow-covered terrain finally leading to the summit at 6,059 m | 19878 ft. Climbing guides fix ropes for the more challenging parts, and the ascent includes crossing a small serac before reaching the exposed summit. The Chulu Far East summit rewards climbers with panoramic views of the Annapurna I (8,091 m), Annapurna II (7,937 m), Annapurna III (7,555 m), Annapurna IV (7,525 m), Gangapurna (7,455 m), Dhaulagiri I (8,167 m), Manaslu (8,163 m), Pisang Peak (6,091 m), Tilicho Peak (7,134 m), Thorong Peak (6,144 m) and many other Himalayan giants. After the summit of Chulu Far East, we descend to the beautiful village of Manang and rejoin the popular Annapurna Circuit Trek. From Manang, the trails continue to Yak Kharka, Thorong Phedi and we cross the famous Thorong La Pass at 5,416 m | 17769 ft. The overall Chulu Far Peak expedition along with the Annapurna Circuit Trek concludes with a descent to Jomsom via Muktinath. After a quick drive from Jomsom to Pokhara we can have a relaxing end to this incredible adventure, and enjoy the beauty of Pokhara's Lakeside. Chulu Far East Peak Climbing along with the Annapurna Circuit Trek is a perfect choice for those seeking to combine natural beauty, cultural exploration, and the thrill of mountaineering in the Nepalese Himalayas. Even though it’s a challenging experience, it rewards you with unforgettable memories and a sense of accomplishment that can’t be achieved any other way. Chulu Far East Peak is a moderately challenging trekking peak in the Annapurna region. It’s considered the easiest of the Chulu Peaks, but climbing it still needs good fitness, basic mountaineering skills, and strong determination. Climb to the summit from the base camp is tough, as it involves steep rocky paths, icy slopes, and snow-filled areas. The whole climbing can be exhausting, especially due to the high altitudes, and steep climbing route of the Chulu Far East Peak. After the successful summit of the peak, trekkers also cross the famous Thorong La Pass (5,416 m), one of the highest and most popular mountain passes. While crossing this high pass adds excitement and offers a sense of accomplishment to the adventure, the trek itself is moderately difficult as we start very early, trekking over 5000 m combined with 9 - 10 hrs of trek. Even with these challenges following proper acclimatization, physical preparation, and the help of our experienced guides, we will cross challenges one by one and complete the Chulu Far East expedition successfully. The entire expedition, with Chulu Far East climbing, and the Annapurna Circuit, takes from 12 to 20 days depending on the experience level of trekkers. We have acclimatization days where we rest or trek few hours, other than that we typically walk 6 to 7 hours daily through stunning but rugged mountain landscapes, making the expedition both demanding and rewarding. The climb goes through remote areas, starting from Nagwal Village, and involves at least 3 days of camping at Yak Kharka and Chulu East Base Camp. Since there are limited facilities, this adds to the challenge. Accommodations during the trek are basic, and the weather in the mountains can change quickly. It’s important to pack essential items like a warm sleeping bag and layered clothing to stay comfortable. While the trails are suitable for those with some trekking experience, proper preparation and a reliable guide are key. It’s also a good idea to have travel insurance to cover emergencies.Chulu Far East Overall Trek Difficulty:
Chulu Far East Peak Climbing difficulty:
The previous section explains the overall difficulty of the Chulu Far East expedition, and here we will learn about the climbing difficulty of Chulu Far East Peak. It lies in its high-altitude terrain and technical sections near the summit. While the peak is considered less technical compared to other Chulu peak climbs, the ascent still includes climbing along the steep scree, icy slopes, snowfields, and glacial bumps. These are the most difficult sections and are physically demanding so they require basic mountaineering skills, such as using crampons, ice axes, ascender, descender, snowbar, harness, and ropes. Our experienced guides teach you how to use these during our acclimatization at the base camp.
As we start the climb to the summit very early in the morning we must deal with freezing temperatures and we reach the summit around sunrise, so we might also face strong winds during the descent around noon. The thin air at high altitudes poses another significant difficulty, with reduced oxygen levels potentially leading to altitude sickness. We acclimatizate at Nagwal village and Chulu Far East base camp before the summit allowing our body to adjust to the lower oxygen levels, and ensure safety from altitude sickness.
We ascend steadily, acclimatizing to avoid symptoms like headaches, fatigue, and nausea. Following the standard itinerary from the Chulu Far East base camp to the summit and back to the base camp in a single day demands both endurance and mental toughness. Despite being categorized as one of the easier trekking peaks, these challenges make it essential to be well-prepared physically, mentally, and technically for a safe and successful climb.
