Why you will love the Hidden Lake Trek?

Hidden Lake, also known as Tridevi Tal, is a hidden gem nestled in the Annapurna region of Nepal. Situated below the magnificent Annapurna South, the lake is a surreal sight as it serves as its own water source and lacks any external water supply. Its religious significance adds to its charm, with locals worshipping at the Baraha Devi temple and offering sacrifices during the Janaipurnima festival. Embark on the journey to Hidden Lake, where vibrant rhododendron forests, untouched wilderness, and undiscovered paths await, promising a remarkable sense of accomplishment and excitement. The lake's serene beauty is enhanced by awe-inspiring vistas of snow-capped peaks, including Annapurna and HiunChuli, luring seasoned trekkers who yearn for an extraordinary experience amidst unspoiled nature and the age-old Gurung customs.

Getting to Hidden Lake and away:

First day: The first section of the Hidden Lake Trek touches on the famous Ghandruk village as we travel to Ghandruk via Jeep and then Trek to Tadapani. The drive takes nearly 2 hr and 30 min with scenic views of the Modi River and traditional villages such as Birethanthi, Kilu and Syulibazar. After reaching Ghandruk Village, we enjoy the scenery and trek to Tadapani, where we stay overnight.

Second day: Trek to Dobato ( Muldei viewpoint)

Third day: Dobato to Pode Kharka.

Fourth day: Pode Kharka to Hidden Lake and trek to Tribung

Fifth day: During the final phase of the Hidden Lake Trek, we trek from Tribung Dada to Chhomrong/ Jhinu Dada and take a drive back to Pokhara with tales filled with adventure to share.

How challenging is the Hidden Lake trek?

The Hidden Lake Trek is somewhat strenuous/challenging treks in the Annapurna region of Nepal. While beginners can easily overcome the steep ascents and descents, and even the altitude sickness can be prevented by acclimatization, the rocky sections and the walk along the ridgy valleys aren’t suggested for beginners. However, for the experienced/professional hikers, this trek offers some of the most spectacular views of the Annapurna range and a visit to the Hidden Lake.
Moreover, the Hidden Lake Trek takes you along the river path with rocky sections and edges; the steep downward section from Hidden Lake to Tribung isn’t for beginners. Furthermore, the area is remote, and Tea Houses aren’t available readily so, unlike other popular treks, you will need to reach the place of accommodation even if you are too tired. With difficulties and a lack of experience, this trek is not recommended for beginners.

Ideal Season for Hidden Lake Trek:

Selecting the ideal season for the Hidden Lake Trek mainly relies on your preferences and adventure tastes. Here, we break down each season's characteristics so that you can choose the best time to embark on your Hidden Lake Trek journey. Although the region is remote with a rugged terrain, the Hidden Lake Trek can be undertaken with ease during the peak trekking seasons of Autumn and Spring. Nevertheless, passionate trekkers still choose to venture on the Hidden Lake Trek in the off-seasons of Monsoon and Winter.

Spring (March to May):

Spring is the perfect season for experienced but laid-back trekkers. With minimal rainfall and clear skies, it presents breathtaking mountain views. Skilled trekkers can embark on this trek with a well-planned itinerary and the guidance of a seasoned professional. In Spring, high altitude snowfalls and the captivating appearance of the hidden lake add to the trek's allure. Daytime temperatures range between 3-9 degrees Celsius, dipping to -6 degrees Celsius at night.

Autumn (September to November):

Autumn is yet another idyllic time for Hidden Lake Trek. Throughout this period, trekkers can delight in warm days and cool nights in higher regions, while little to no rainfall creates a hassle-free experience for skilled hikers. After the Monsoon season washes away dirt and debris, the trek to Hidden Lake becomes even more pristine. Daytime temperatures during Autumn hover around 5-10 degrees Celsius, while nights can bring temperatures as low as -6 degrees Celsius.

Summer Season (June to August):

Summer beckons rainy days, with daily precipitation turning the paths muddy and riddled with leeches. An abundance of greenery, including wildflowers, herbs, and medicinal plants, speckle the valleys during this season. Although most trekkers avoid Summer, those who undertake the trip in this season find themselves amongst stunning landscapes unique to this time of year. Average daytime temperatures range from 8-15 degrees Celsius and can drop to 0 degrees Celsius at night.

Winter Season (December to Feburary):

Winter's cold, dry days with little to no rainfall make the experience significantly more challenging than Spring and Autumn. Extreme cold and snowfall increase the level of difficulty; snow may block certain sections of the route, so an experienced guide is essential.

This season's inherent risks come with great rewards, such as glistening snow-draped peaks and an opportunity to embrace the playfulness of the Himalayas' winter wonderland. During Winter, as the trail could be covered in snow, it's recommended to consult with local trekking agencies and experienced guides to determine the feasibility and safety of undertaking the Hidden Lake trek. Average daytime temperatures in Winter range between 2-6 degrees Celsius, dropping to -6 to -10 degrees Celsius during nighttime.

History and Religious Significance of Hidden Lake/ Tridevi Tal:

Our team from North Nepal Treks explored the hidden lake on 23rd July 2022 along with the trekking trails, and we found fascinating insights about the Hidden Lake from the local people in the region:

Situated directly below the Annapurna South, Hidden Lake boasts natural scenery and mountain views alike. Moreover, it is hard for anyone to believe with just words(you need to see it to believe it), but Hidden Lake is unique as it doesn’t have any water sources, and the lake itself is its water source. Additionally, Hidden Lake is truly a supernatural existence and holds religious significance in the local community. “Tridevi Tal” is the sacred name of the hidden lake in the Nepali Language, and many locals worship here.

Talking a bit about history, Yak herders discovered the Hidden Lake many years ago, also known as dzopkyo in Nepal. The Yak Herders used to worship here long ago, which is continued till now.

Returning to the religious significance, the Hidden Lake hosts a Baraha Devi temple where people ask for a wish. When their wish gets fulfilled, they offer Maheli Devi (like Middle child, middle Devi) sacrifice of sheep. The puja/ceremony takes place in Janaipurnima, a festival of Hindus during the time of Autumn. All the locals sacrifice the sheep to the Devi, and they even claim that the blood of the worshipped sheep flows towards the upwards section of the Lake instead of going downwards.

Moreover, the trail that leads to the Hidden Lake is filled with more than 500 species of herbs, which include medicinal herbs such as Narmasi, Panchaaule, Banlasun, Marmal, and Kutki (consumed by patients with high blood pressure and diabetes) and many more.

The Hidden Lake is a place you must explore once in a lifetime, so to be mesmerized by the blend of unparalleled natural beauty and ancient Gurung tradition, contact us now.
